The instant of greatest eclipse takes place on 1879 Jan 08 at 12:04:11 TD (12:04:16 UT1). This is 6.2 days before the Moon reaches perigee. During the eclipse, the Moon is in the constellation Gemini. The synodic month in which the eclipse takes place has a Brown Lunation Number of -544.

The eclipse belongs to Saros 103 and is number 79 of 82 eclipses in the series. All eclipses in this series occur at the Moon’s descending node. The Moon moves northward with respect to the node with each succeeding eclipse in the series and gamma increases.

This is a very shallow penumbral eclipse. It has a penumbral eclipse magnitude of only 0.0812 and a penumbral eclipse duration of 82.4 minutes. Gamma has a value of 1.5243.

The penumbral lunar eclipse of 1879 Jan 08 is followed two weeks later by a annular solar eclipse on 1879 Jan 22.

Another lunar eclipse occurs one synodic month after the 1879 Jan 08 eclipse. It is the penumbral lunar eclipse of 1879 Feb 07.

Calendar

The Gregorian calendar (also called the Western calendar) is internationally the most widely used civil calendar. It is named for Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in 1582.
